Recycled Fire Hose Belt

You would never guess this cool belt is made from old fire hose from the London Fire Brigade. The Fire House, a UK based company, is constantly thinking about waste. The instant they met the London Fire Brigade they fell in love with their old hose. They scrubbed away all the soot, grease, and everything else that builds up after 25 years of active duty, and in the process discovered a truly remarkable, truly green textile. After a long search for a local buckle maker willing to use recycled pewter, the belts were born. On top of it, they are giving 50% of their profits to the London Fire Brigade's Benevolent Fund. A great gift for dads.
Available at Fire Hose.

Spa Baby Tub Saves Water
Our daughter Sophie loves her European Spa Baby Tub. This unique bathing tub allows for a natural, upright position, calming and relaxing your baby with warm water up to his or her shoulders. (A reclined position in traditional tubs often makes babies feel exposed and uncomfortable.) And you'll be surprised by how little water is used for a bath. It's also made of polypropylene--a safe, non-toxic, and recyclable plastic with no BPA.

Fair Trade Plush Toys

I'm really excited to introduce, for the first time in the U.S., a line of super-cute, fair trade and organic cotton plush toys from France. The line is from Papili, a brand new French company, and is certified by the fair trade label Max Havelaar. That means the entire process--from growing the cotton to manufacturing-- adheres to strict fair trade standards.
Why is Fair Trade important? Take the article I recently read by a BBC journalist about cotton harvesting in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is the 2nd largest exporter of cotton in the world. I was shocked to learn that the Uzbek government closes schools from September to November--so that children can harvest the cotton.
Human rights groups estimate some 450,000 children are working in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan during every harvest. The goal of the BBC journalist was to find out if major UK companies like Marks & Spencer knew where the cotton used by their suppliers was coming from, since that department store prides itself on its strict ethical standards. It appears that they did not. Since then, many European companies have banned their suppliers from using Uzbek cotton. But what about American companies? Check out the entire article at Child labour and the High Street.

Cardboard Castle from Mr McGroovy

Mr. McGroovy's Box Rivets™ grew out of a project idea from Mr MCGroovy days as an art teacher. Building box structures is an absolutely great activity for kids, so... when his son turned five and needed a backyard castle for his “knights and princesses” party theme they built it themselves. The response from parents and other children at the party encouraged him to share this great activity, and the idea for Mr. McGroovy's was born. It is brilliant and easy, i tried it with my kids and they love their "dinosaur" and "princess" castle. It was a great family project.

Bisphenol-A free Baby Bottles

Is your baby's bottle toxic? Baby's Toxic Bottles, a study by a team of US and Canadian researchers has shown that plastic polycarbonate baby bottles leach dangerous levels of Bisphenol-A (BPA) when heated. All five brands tested,Evenflo, Dr Browns, Avent, Playtex and Gerber, leached BPA. Adults should also be aware of the dangers as popular "Nalgene" bottles and other water bottles are made of the same type of plastic.
BPA, a common component in clear plastic, is a hormone-disrupting synthetic estrogen. According to the study, even at very low doses, BPA’s mimicry of estrogen resulted in an array of health maladies including prostate and breast cancer, early onset of puberty, obesity, hyperactivity, lowered sperm count, miscarriage, diabetes, and altered immune system in animal studies. The hormone like chemical could be the reason for overall rates of lower sperm counts, faster onset of puberty, and increased prostate cancer in humans.
The good news is that you have now great alternative to polycarbonate baby bottles, Adiri Natural Nurser and Green to Grow are both free of BPA and phthalate, another chemicals suspected of lowering testosterone in men.
Get 10% off Adiri and Green to Grow baby bottles at Zoë b Organic, click on the following link BPA Free Baby bottles and enter BPA in source code during check out to receive 10% off your purchase of any Adiri or Green to Grow Baby Bottles. Offer ends 02/29/08.
